Wetumpka, the “City of Natural Beauty,” is nestled in the bedrock of Alabama at
the foot of the Appalachian mountains. It was here 80 million years
ago that a meteor struck the land and created a four mile crater.
Wetumpka is divided by the Coosa River where the Bibb Graves Bridge
is the link to Historic West Wetumpka. The Historic District is
where Old
Wetumpka House Bed and Breakfast is located.
The Greek Revival home was built in 1849 by a man named Alex Due
who remained there until 1900. Mr.Stanley then bought the home, who
after owning it only a month, sold it to the Freeman family. Thus,
began the ownership of three generations of the same family for
over 100 years until Mike and Dale Heath purchased the house in
2006.
The Heaths renovated
this 4000 sq. ft. historic home with a bed and breakfast in mind.
Guests may choose from two rooms or the suite:
The Parks
Room: An antique
double bed with a private bath, complete with the original clawfoot
tub.
The Robbins
Room: a King
size antique reproduction bed with private bath and original
clawfoot tub.
The
Freeman Suite:
Full size bed in Art Deco surroundings, private bathroom with tiled
shower. A large private sitting room with
mini-kitchenette, television, table, daybed and window seat. This
Suite offers two rooms with a separate entrance.
A 100 year old pecan tree dominates the back yard where equally old
flowers and shrubs thrive. The neighborhood is lined with old
churches that are registered on the National Registry of Historic
Buildings and other registered historic homes that define the
antiquity of West Wetumpka.
HGTV’s “If Walls Could
Talk” featured
the Heath’s house in 2007 during the renovation process when many
things were uncovered and discovered in the depths of the big attic
and under the house. The uncovered items are preserved in a
showcase for all who are curious to see what was found.
Traditional southern fare and wonderful recipes culled from family
cook books of long ago are prepared and served each morning in a
formal dining room or on the back porch. Also, Sunday Afternoon
Teas highlight the recipes of current popular magazine issues.
Snacks and drinks are complimentary additions to the parlor where
television and movies can be seen. Need to bring your laptop? Wi-Fi
internet is available at no additional charge.
Wetumpka is host to many community activities,
annual events, and places of interest; Christmas on the Coosa, July
4th
Celebration and fireworks,
Gold Star Park brown bag concerts, and Jasmine Hill Gardens
(seasonal), Fort Toulouse (French Settlement from 1717) and Fort
Jackson, Riverfest, Boat races, Coosa River Whitewater Festival,
and Riverside Entertainment Center Creek Indian Gaming, plus great
fishing on Lake Jordan and Lake Martin. Wetumpka was the featured
town in Tim Burton's "Big Fish", due to it's beauty and the Coosa
River grandly flowing around it. Wetumpka is 13 miles NE of
Montgomery.
Old
Wetumpka House Bed and Breakfast has just the right ambience for hosting
special parties; bridal showers and mother/daughter teas and small
gatherings for clubs, office parties and luncheons.
